Day 10: Victoria fjord – we are here!
After heavy ice breaking Oden has reached its destination, the Victoria fjord. Yesterday we made a second successful attempt to measure temperature with an Expandable bathythermograph (XPT) from helicopter. This sensor is a free falling probe that continuously measures the temperature on its way to the seabed. This time we improved the grounding line hanging below the helicopter and into the water, improving the quality of the data. We are preparing for deploying water column measurements from helicopter and hopefully I can tell you more tomorrow. There has been a lot of other activities going on today. Helicopter is transporting scientist to land for archeological studies, lakes has been studied, driftwood has been collected. Today the land teams encountered a fairly large group of narwhales hanging around near to the beach. The tagging attempt was not successful since they slipped away when the RIB came close. Otherwise, there been ring seals, polar bears and fresh tracks from wolfs. This evening the mapping started, bringing us slowly closer into the fjord. Let’s end with a beautiful picture of Sherard Osborn and Victoria fjord.
